Chapter 29
Oliver
My alarm gently pulls me from my dreams. I set it to the lowest possible volume so that maybe it wouldnât wake her up, too. Luckily my plan worked, sheâs still fast asleep.
Angelwood. The word practically smacks me in the face as soon as I come to. I looked it up after she fell asleep, and itâs over four hours away. Not as far as it could be, I guess I should be thrilled that she isnât vying to go to school across the country somewhere. But itâs still far.
The anxious feeling in my gut is still there from last night when she told me what her plans for after high school were. Maybe I just shouldnât have asked, but senior year is already almost halfway over.
I canât deny what I keep imagining will happen. Sheâll go to her fancy rich kid college, sheâll meet some fraternity douchebag thatâs majoring in economics and comes from a family like hers, and sheâll forget all about me. Even though everything about Oakley tells me that wonât happen, I still canât convince myself that it wonât. Time and time again sheâs proven that money isnât what matters to her, but how could she possibly choose to stay with a dude like me when sheâs at a university with so many better options around?
I stare down at her, still wrapped in my arms. Her golden hair is a mess, fanned out around her on the pillow we shared last night. I feel so warm and safe with her in my bed, I wish it could be this way every morning.
I look over at the digital clock on my desk that reads 6:12 AM in glowing red numerals. I donât want to wake her, she looks so peaceful, so delicate. But I have to make sure she gets home before 7:00.
I know weâre way too young to be planning our futures around a relationship, but I donât want this to end. I know that if she moves away it will probably have to. I canât let this slip through my fingers. The thought of it hurts my heart. I fucking love her. It sounds weird, even to me, but Iâm in love. At seventeen. Iâm a dumbass, what the fuck have I gotten myself into?
I feel her start to wiggle in my arms as she wakes up, and her eyes softly flutter open.
I press a kiss to her forehead. âMorning.â
âGood morning.â
âItâs almost 6:30.â
She startles and sits up in the bed, her eyes wide. âFuckâ¦â she says as she runs her fingers through her tangled hair.
I chuckle. âIâve got you cussing and having sex now. Iâm turning you into a heathen.â
She rolls her eyes as her face turns pink. âWas that your plan?â
I shake my head. âNo. I like that youâre such a good girl. It turns me on, actually.â
I slide my hand up her thigh and slip my fingertips under the boxers I let her borrow. I hear her sigh and watch as she flutters her eyes closed.
